Kathmandu & Nepal …

Me being re-assigned to now work in Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka (and India), will mean more GHNI activity blogs from these countries and others as we begin work in them. Our newest GHNI staff member is Nepalese and I so look forward to working with him in Nepal. Ironically, Kiran Karki only a few days ago sent this e-mail to me, explaining some of the flooding situations in Nepal and even near his home in Kathmandu. Following is his e-mail:

Dear All,
In August, Nepal has faced heavy rains which brought flooding and landslides in the many parts of the country. Many people lost their lives and many are displaced. A big section of the Arniko Highway joining Nepal and China was washed away, and the lake is inundating settlements, farms and bridges. As word spread, there is panic in some areas as people fled to higher ground.
The landslide site is 1km upstream from the intake structure of the Sun Kosi Power House at Dolalghat, and downstream from the Bhote Kosi Hydroelectric Project. Many people have been lost and many houses were swept away by the recent flood in Darchula district and other districts in far-western Nepal due to the flood in Mahakali, Seti, and Karnali rivers. Other villages have also been affected due to the flood. Rescue effort have been affected as well due to the high level of water.

Geneva Switzerland & Macon, France … GHNI

What a privilege for us to enjoy a spot of variety and venue change as this trip to the GHNI Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. From there we all headed to Macon, France where we hosted over 250 delegates in “Poverty Challenges” and other venues for helping the poorest of the poor. Serving was all-inclusive for all us GHNI staff as we fed and provided all meeting arrangements for the delegates.

Education & Income-Generation in Jatapara, India !

Jatapara the GHNI adopted village in India near Dumka is now keenly focused on Education and Income Generation.

“Ownership” of these issues secure … their indigenous local committee chose these two as their top priority needs. Because of a lack of quality teachers in the government school, students learn little. Initially, parents were a good measure laissez faire about their children’s education. After TCD brought awareness about education and their children’s’ precious futures, parental priorities changed. The number of children now attending after-school has increase from 15 to 60. Along with education, they are also teaching music and dance. The children are naturally very excited about this!

Jatapara also formed an Income Generation committee of all ladies. Men from this village go to Dumka and other towns for work. It is very difficult to get them involved in the committee. Many of the women in this village make country liquor and sell it to earn some money. During our committee meeting they agreed that this is not good for their society. So they have decided to plant cash crop for additional income.

Monthly reporting is integral to to our work. It is so exciting to see a 2nd generation(really a 3rd!) of envisioned TCD implementors. This recent report is word-for-word from our leadership in India and exhibits the nature of what GHNI is about. Enjoy!

The GHNI-India team is working really hard with the villagers in Dhokar Jhara and want to share their progress.

Caught the Vision!

Bosam Marandi is no more the same. He has caught the vision of TCD and he has become the model for the whole village. He grew up here. When he was very young, his father died and he being the elder son, had to take care of his family. In order for him to provide for the family, he had to go out of the village for months at a time for work. Of course this is the same case with many many other people here. This happens because of the growing season. After the growing season is over, men leave their families and go out in search for work. This is effects the education of the children and many other areas of life.

TCD is encouraging people not to go out of the village and teaching them how to grow their income while they stay in the village. Growing a second crop is one of the ways. Yet Bosam Marandi has gone one step further. Along with growing second crop, he is also doing multiple work to grow his income and has become a model for others.
