Jeff’s latest … and ZOOM registration for live ZOOM event tomorrow/Wednesday/22nd
About 1 hour ago (sent Monday, Jeff’s time), another earthquake struck the historic city of Antioch.
ANTAKYA, Turkey (Reuters) -A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck the Turkey-Syria border region late on Monday, setting off panic and damaging buildings in Turkey’s Antakya city two weeks after the country’s worst earthquake in modern history left tens of thousands dead.
Two Reuters witnesses reported a strong quake and further damage to buildings in central Antakya, where it was centered. It was also felt in Egypt and Lebanon, Reuters reporters said.
The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said the tremor struck at a depth of 2 km (1.2 miles). Other witnesses said Turkish rescue teams were running around after the latest quake, checking people were unharmed.
Muna Al Omar, a resident, said she was in a tent in a park in central Antakya when the earthquake hit. “I thought the earth was going to split open under my feet,” she said, crying as she held her 7-year-old son in her arms. “Is there going to be another aftershock?” she asked.
The two larger earthquakes that hit on Feb. 6, which also rocked neighboring Syria, left more than a million homeless and killed far more than the latest official tally of 46,000 people in both countries.
Our soup kitchens are up and running
We are scheduled to be in Antioch/Antakya on Wednesday. With the new earthquake, it makes everything much more real. It is uncertain what new destruction awaits us. I will be in the earthquake region with a team of nine Turks & Americans. We will be looking for the Hidden & the Hurting and places to serve, not just this week but for the months to come. We are looking to increase the effectiveness and impact of the aid you have provided.
As I said last week, we will be giving a live report from the devastated region on Wednesday, 11 am (EST), 8 am (Calif), 5 pm (Geneva). You will need to register beforehand. Click on the picture above, or use this link – https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJEqcuiqrjwuHtJhSA0Q9k0FnUYW9-xyPbGZ
Since I will have little ability to communicated and limited electricity, I will not be able to help if you have any connection issues. If you need help, please contact my buddy Lee – lee.westphal@ghni.org

Turkey and Syria In Unfathomable Disasters … And Need All Help … !

Turkey and Syria are very much in the news and in urgent need of every help available. This particular write-up is from a release from GHNI staff, Jeff and Beth Latsa, who currently lives in Turkey. Donation sites are listed within their update.

Currently, I am also working with another organization that is providing immediate relief that is more focused on Recovery Efforts, directly related to securing potential lives (time is about out) and bodies still under the collapsed buildings, in Syria, where almost no aid is being provided via NGO(s) and/or governments. Those efforts are via FrontierPartnersInternatinal and sent directly to WarmHeartMinistries in Lebanon, where teams are already on the ground and working in Syria. Funds for such efforts can be directed to:

Here’s back to Jeff and Beth …
A Semi-Truck Full Of FoodEstablishment of 5 Soup KitchensSending 40-Foot Containers with Doors and Windows to Set Up Bases of Operations I WANT TO HELP

As the human suffering is immeasurable, many times the response is measured by the number of water bottles, diapers, and body bags distributed. The official death toll has climbed to over 40,000, yet our friends on the ground tell us that the real number might be 5 to 10 times higher. The pain of a mother that has lost her entire family and future or the grief of a father holding the lifeless body of his baby is being felt across an area that stretches across 200 miles. This is similar to the distance from Cleveland to Columbus and then to Cincinnati; the earthquake destroyed most of the cities in between. The scope of the work is unfathomable.

As a response, we and several partners have established soup kitchens in five of the hardest-hit areas. Since many people’s homes have collapsed, all their plates and belongings are crushed, and they are unable to cook for themselves. We cook boiled eggs in the morning and simple meals like soup or pasta and we use vans to deliver the cooked meals to the survivors and their families.
As a sign of our long-term commitment, we have sent refurbished shipping containers similar to single wide mobile homes from Izmir, the city we live in, to be used as soup kitchens.
Next week, I will be headed to the earthquake-affected area. I am assembling a small team of highly trained professionals who can make a significant impact, lay a foundation of the future, and provide credibility for our work. This team includes two medical doctors, a person trained in search and rescue, our Disaster Relief Director, a friend who ran a soup kitchen for 5,000 people during the last earthquake, Basak (our Turkish National Leader)…and me.
Although not yet confirmed, I plan on having a live report from the earthquake area via ZOOM. Tentatively it is scheduled for 11:00am EST (8:00am PST; 5:00pm Europe) on Wed., 22 Feb., 2023. Once I get it set up, I will send you an invite. I’d love to have you join us, ask questions, and find out how you too can get involved and help. I WANT TO HELP

Thank you for your compassion for these families that have lost so much. God bless, jjl

Earthquake Disaster Relief – Nepal STT

Earthquake disaster relief continues via GHNI …
Short Term Team – STT/GHNI was on the ground last week in Nepal, as they helped in relieving “some” of the devastation encountered by villagers and in Kathmandu.

Total Destruction of Village Home
Total Destruction of Village Home

Amazing hospitality never ceases to amaze our team, as even now living in temporary shelters made of sticks, roof tins, tarps, etc., the locals in one tiny village we helped, insisted on feeding us the best of their best. “Humbled”, is a word that couldn’t come close to how we felt. These people are amazing in how they are committed to re-establishing life, regardless of resources. We were there simply to provide such.

Provisions of roofing tin(s), tarps, rice and other food essentials were distributed by our team in both remote village locations, as well as in Kathmandu.

Purchasing and utilizing “local resources” is a foundational GHNI concept. GHNI desires, as much as possible, to support and enhance the local economies, purchasing from these sources when possible, even in disaster relief times such as this.

Beauty of life, new and not so, continues to rise from the rubble of these types of disasters … giving us all a glimpse of the “potential” goodness of life and the extraordinary hope intrinsic in some.

“Just” another e-mail ?!

“Just” another e-mail from our Nepal(Kiran Karki) national director to Sushi(S. Asia director) …
Dear Sushil,
We had been in Nallu VDC Lalitpur for Relief Assessment. Nallu is a remote
village of Lalitpur district. It is about 35 kilometer from Kathmandu to the
east. Nallu populated with poor typical Tamang people. Nallu is one of the
highly affected VDC by the earthquake. It not only shaked the houses but
shaked the heart of the people and took them to the zero. Their main earning
source is labor. We will distribute them food items for relief now but we
are trying to focus TCD in that village in the days to come.

Also there is a humble request to provide tin for 9 Chepang poor families
from Raksirang Makawanpur. We are going to distribute them in this week.

Regards,
Kiran
